I have been asked by quite a few people why I am not releasing these documents under some form of open source licence.
The answer to that is: documents are not like software and thus need different protection.
If I write software and licence it under an open source licence, I am quite happy to have people improve on the software and release changed versions of it. Software does something and someone else improving the software benefits all of us.
The same is not the case for a document. Documents generally express and explore ideas and it is quite possible to have a conversation about ideas without having to modify the original document to do so. Discussion in the academic world (and elsewhere) demonstrates the need to clearly understand who is saying what.
Interweft's and my professional reputation depends on how others perceive my knowledge, skills and the thought that goes into applying these. I need the ideas and arguments that I express to clearly state where I am coming from (and going to) in my professional practice.
As with any professional, ideas are a key part of my stock in trade. I cannot allow a situation to arise where my ideas and those of others can be confused - possibly to my detriment.
To avoid this problem, I retain copyright for my documents.
